Hillel, Telling Our Stories
Storytelling is essential to the Jewish tradition. It is why we read the weekly Torah portion and why holidays such as Passover, where the story of Exodus is reenacted viscerally through the Passover Seder, continue to endure.
Hillel at the University of Minnesota lives on through stories as well, those of current students, of alumni and of the community members who support us. That is why we at Hillel would like to introduce “Hillel, Telling Our Stories,” a series of interviews with students, alumni and community members about their Hillel experiences and their hopes for Hillel in the future.
Please watch these excerpts from interviews with Hillel students, and if Hillel was important to you during your college days at the University of Minnesota, we want to hear from you! Click here and sign up to do an interview with a Hillel volunteer or student.
“…Hillel is important because we [Jewish students] are a minority here...It’s important to keep us together so that we don’t lose track of our cultural values and shared heritage…”

“…I grew up in Whitewater, Wisconsin, where I was the Jewish population. So it’s been nice to come here and find people who I can share a culture and a heritage with, because I’ve never had that before.”
- Sarah Boden, First Year, Spring 2007

“My favorite Hillel experience is probably leading services for the first time [and] seeing a room full of people excited about services and about Judaism.”
- Brad Serber, First Year, Spring 2007

“…College students who come here from other states don’t go back; they stay here. So it really links us to community in a broader sense because…it’s an easier transition after you’ve been active at Hillel to become active in the Jewish community in the Minneapolis area.”
- Harry Sklar, Fourth Year, Spring 2007
